Local council giving away soil improver

My local council is giving away soil improver. I've already had two boots full and will be heading back for more. Just a heads up if anyone is in the Wakefield area.

Any other local councils doing this?

What a great service. It would be even better if they invited people to make a voluntary donation on collecting the compost to go to a nominated charity.

  • They do provide it here, too (N Wales) and it's very popular

I asked our council about it,  she said people had complained so much about the weeds in it that they wouldn’t be offering it,  they use it on their own beds.  I know someone who brought in a load of JKW.
Maybe other councils have hotter heaps to kill al weeds, ours obviously didn’t.
After seeing what people put in their waste bags I wouldn’t use it.

  • Just looked on the Fenland Council website, it appears they've teamed up with getcomposting.com - you just type in your postcode. As an example they are selling a Blackwall 220L bin for £22.50 - same product on Amazon is £65.

Don't much care for the plastic ones, but they 'look tidy(ish)' - I'm having a domestic with my OH as he's not into gardening and he hates compost heaps. I'm very tempted to buy.

Thanks for the heads up that I should check.

I use it a lot, but have to pay for it here. I have seen the heaps and they are certainly hot.

Good to hear @punkdoc.  Perhaps they’ll try that here.

@Lyn if you're able to get to Exeter area, I've used the company below in the past who fill up a trailer/pickup load for free!

Not affiliated with them in any way, it's just that having found them (it wasn't easy!) it's worth a share - presuming they still offer it. It's the stuff that Toby Buckland uses, I believe.

I had to call the number on the site and find out when it was available for collection.

Too far from Exeter and we  sold the truck when we retired.
Maybe West Devon will have a scheme in time.
