Crocus in shade

mchuamchua Posts: 210
Hey folks, last autumn I planted some crocus corms. One or two came up within 3 weeks, like they were triggered early for some reason. Anyway, at the time, the sun reached round far enough to that spot, and those two “rogue” crocuses opened beautifully.  But now, in late winter that spot doesn’t receive sunlight.  Rookie error.  All the crocuses have come up, but they don’t open due to no direct sunlight.

Shall I lift them at some point when they die back?

They do tend to stay shut if it's shadier, although they usually open a bit. I have quite a lot that are in shadier sites.
You can lift them now if you want - it won't make any real difference to them if you're careful  :)

Some flower earlier than others. There are a mass of yellow crocus on the green just outside my house. Mine are just showing leaves atm, but I can see the buds starting to form.
Wait and see what happens before doing anything drastic.

Do you think they will still set seed and naturalise even if they don’t open?

If they never open, then no, but I'd say that's quite unusual.
You'll be a long time waiting for them to do that anyway though. They multiply more quickly by producing bulblets  :)

The bright yellow ones are out round here now @Pete.8, and some of the purples. They're always a bit earlier. I get a few Cream Beauties appearing at this time of year, although they're not fully opened yet. They're the first crocus of mine to appear, then the white varieties.  :)
