Planting my peony root

Think I'm a bit late for planting peonies, so would it be best to plant this root in a pot rather than plant it in a cold flower bed?

It's a wee little thing with no obvious 'eye', though I think there's one on the left. Don't want to scratch away at the soil in case I damage a tender root.

I've read not to bury the 'eye' more than 2.5cm above the 'eye'.

I would say definitely in a pot, it looks a bit small to go out in the big wide world just yet.

Yes I agree, thank you, nice to have confirmation. Even I would find it hard to be so cruel  :'(

I agree too. Much easier for then planting out in spring or summer.
I plant mine higher than the recommended 1 inch or so, with the eyes virtually at soil level. Even though the current one I have is against the house wall where it should be a bit drier, I have heavy clay soil and it's in the direction of the prevailing weather.
It just helps to mitigate the amount of rain, and therefore the amount of wet soil at the crown, so if you're in a very wet area like me, that's worth doing.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
