We don't usually have to worry too much about pots in sunny aspects here, if they're in the open, and as long as it's only for a few days, but any more than that, and it would be dodgy. In a spot, sheltered from the rain, that would be different. If we get any more summers like last year though, that would also be different. I'm praying that it was a one off! The amount of soil you use will also depend on the plants you put in. A decent sized shrub, or one of those Cordylines/Phormiums, would need far more depth than most annuals for example. They need very little depth of soil. I'm assuming you wouldn't put sweet peas or similar in them - they'd need more depth too - but they couldn't be left to their own devices anyway
