I think it shows why Thatcher's Asset Stripping , or Privitisation as they called it, was BAD for consumers. They're basically a Cartel, and the , so called , Regulator Ofgem is totally on the side of suppliers , NOT consumers.
Currently paying 14p per Kwh with a 5p rate at night so we can charge the car. And 25p per day for the standing charge. This deal runs out at the end of November, so we expect to be paying a good bit more after that. We only have electricity, no chance of gas around here. We ditched heating oil last March and installed a heat pump. We needed a new boiler anyway, so took the plunge as there were some good grants on offer.
So far so good. It generates about 3 units of electricity for every 1 we purchase, but that will drop a bit in the winter.

Standing charges pay for the cost of supplying and maintaining the wires and pipes that bring energy to our homes plus the cost of meter readings. The cost is around £270 per household per year, a cost that has recently increased because the standing charge now has to pay the cost of bailing out energy firms that are going or have gone bust.
If a household consumes half of the average energy usage standing charges constitute around 20% of their payments. For a household using twice the national average the contribution is just 5%. Many see this as unfair because the poorest households are likely to be lower users and thus there is a good argument that standing charges should be scrapped.

Bee, we have an economy 7 tariff with Scottish Power. From Saturday unit prices will be 44.21 at the day rate and 11.18 for the night rate. Having looked at the figures quite closely the difference, for us, in switching from Economy 7 to a standard tariff would be a saving of about £8 a year. It was not worth it but we’re monitoring our usage and the figures.

The alternative view (not saying that I necessarily agree, either way) is that the infrastructure costs are the same regardless of how much gas/electricity a household uses. Some above-average users are the more vulnerable, elderly or disabled (or both) who are at home all day and can't move about easily so are more at risk from being cold than younger, healthier people. If higher users paid more "standing charges" rolled into the per-unit prices, effectively they would be subsidising the infrastructure for lower users.

Our current deal isn't Economy 7, but a tariff that Octopus offer for electric car owners. The "night" hours are midnight to 4am, which is plenty of time for car charging, and we also run the washing machine and dishwasher. The heat pump also tops up the hot water during those hours. So we think we're doing what we can .... but we do expect a substantial increase when this deal runs out.
