I've never used anything to clean my machine. The repair bloke was astonished at how clean the machine was. He asked how often it was used, and was even more surprised when I said at least 5 times a week.
I might have a look at those @raisingirl - thanks.  Soft water here of course  ;)

Thought I'd pass on a tip I read yesterday - if your gas is currently on a variable rate price capped scheme and you don't have a smart meter, read and submit your meter reading by 31st March to ensure you are not charged the higher rate for gas you've used before the increase.  Any saving's worth having!

Also, going right back to that start of this thread @BenCotto, Citizens Advice are currently saying the fixed prices now on offer are all higher than the expected level after the next two 'cap' rises - so next autumn. Therefore variable is very much better at the moment than anything else out there.

You can still get a good deal from Octopus, apparently, if you're able to make use of electricity in the wee small hours and cut right down during the day - i.e. if you have a hot water storage cylinder and a well insulated, draught free house. Only electricity though, not for gas

Thank you for that, @Plantminded. In fact I already have a note in my diary to do so at the end of the month. Envisaging half the country sending in readings on the 31st and the system crashing, I think I’ll submit my readings on the 30th.

We’re quite a bit above average in our energy consumption - all sorts of reasons why - and currently pay £150 a month on a very good fixed price tariff, ending in two weeks. My calculations show that will double when we go to the standard variable capped tariff. A month ago the best fixed price tariff that Scottish Power was offering us was £360 pcm. Checking yesterday that fixed tariff had risen to £600.

    Jeez @BenCotto. That's horrendous.  :/
I'd read about doing readings at end of March too, but you could well be right about systems crashing. The info also advised taking a reading at that point as well, which I did, although they'd just had a reading, because the advice is that you should get all that interim period of usage [up to April] at your current rate.

I should maybe use the washing machine at night now @raisingirl, because the new one doesn't sound like The Flying Scotsman going through a tunnel at 100mph.  ;)

    It could be worse @BenCotto

I guess you can send in readings as often as you want - weekly. Joyfully, with a metre, I can get daily info on the website of how much I use. Data for monthly, yearly etc.

As you folks know,we had solar panels installed last week,in fact a week ago. Pop up on my phone from some 'green energy modelling" company I've never heard of. Saying, get a heat pump and solar panels to power it. Says the "average" 3 bed house will cost around £3.300 to install solar panels
They haven't made any mention of how long it would take to recoup the initial cost. We looked into having solar panels for 10 years.  It was a great deal of money, we are now in serious dispute with the sub contractor, is predicted it will take 5 years at the current rises in fuel. I did a 2 year fix with Octopus last July, long before all these rises, thankfully. A mild winter and being careful,am still £260 in credit.

Just put my details in to Money Supermarket. This is what came up as the cheapest deal

If you don’t have smart meters it’s a good idea to send accurate energy meter readings to your energy company today or tomorrow before prices surge on Friday.
