Suggestion for tree in a half barrel, full sun?
Hi there,
I had a birthday in December and friends asked me what I'd like. I asked for a half barrel for planting. It arrived well in time at their house and they were shocked at its arrival state. They cut it evenly across the top, re-strapped it, sanded it down and revarnished. They even lined it and put a sealed drainage hole in for me. After all the work they've done I'd really like to do them proud and make it look extra special.
Any suggestions for what to plant in it? It'll be fairly sheltered from the wind but will have full morning/early afternoon sun in the summer. It'll be too heavy to bring indoors for overwintering too so needs to be hardy enough to survive a north of England winter. I'm thinking a dwarf apple? I've only recently started taking an interest in gardening so if you more experienced folk could offer better ideas I'd be really grateful. Thank you!!

It's definitely going to be a dwarf variety required, l would say. As @Plantminded says, the location will play a part as well
Thanks @JennyJ Friend lined and put some drainage in too. I'm spoiled!
