Another possible source of help for your Geranium may be to contact one of the Hardy Geranium specialists such as The Cranesbill Nursery or The Hardy Geranium Nursery, both run by enthusiastic and knowledgeable owners.
Landscaper John Little grows his thyme in pure crushed concrete substrate. He also used crushed sinks, toilets, pure builders' sand or motorway waste, with zero top soil. He is a fascinating designer to explore if you're interested in Med planting or low maintenance, highly biodiverse planting.
That looks like my front garden when we first moved here. I am always amazed at the amount of rubble, whole bricks, breeze blocks, panes of glass etc. that are discarded on building sites but trial and error find the plants that thrive and it seems to be the Mediterranean ones that like the spot.
As to the problems with the thyme and the geraniums, I appreciate all the advice and will be looking at the soil conditions to see if the past year's weather has been at the root of things. Last summer was one hell of a disappointment in the garden so I wouldn't be surprised if some of the plants picked up on the gloomy mood. And thanks for the advice to contact one of the specialist nurseries...............they ought to know if there are any problems with certain varieties.
