  Thanks. Well my soil is stony so maybe that means ok drainage. I might try a couple, it's the tall 'Amistad' I'd like to try so will see what happens.

  Veronicas [Veronicastrum]  are similar, and so is Hyssop. You can get a range of colours with veronicas [pinks, blues, white]  and hyssops are mainly blue or white. 
  Sun for all of them. 
  There are other plants which are also good for insects/pollinators if that's the reason you want salvias 

  It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
