Holly tree suckers/runners

I have a self seeded holly tree in my garden, it's about 7ft tall and I like it because it's native and has berries, but it does send out suckers/runners that pop up in the area around the tree which i'm starting to dig up.
So, is it worth keeping the tree and managing the runners or is this going to turn into an unwanted nightmare?
