I was thinking I could keep the patio but lay a gravel path out to the gate. This would remove the slip hazard during the wet and cold months. Surely in the summer months, the patio directly under the pergola would not be slippy?
I still like the idea of the patio as I would like a nice stable base for the table and chairs to sit outside when it is summer.
You could certainly mix paving and gravel as a patio, which would be a good compromise. How slippery it would be in summer will depend on your location and climate. In a north facing aspect here, it would be slippery in most summers. In hotter, drier areas, maybe not so bad

Roughly how many miles as the crow flies would you be above Glasgow? Just as an indication as I would be further south than you it appears which would mean I stand a decent chance in summer of having the patio not being slippy.
