    I usually buy it in Waitrose - the only supermarket in town now.
    But i've previously bought it from Sainsbury's and Somerfield - all of them have produced shoots

    The spraying with growth inhibitors is just something I've heard mentioned many times before. I don't know if it's widespread or even happens in our country but do know a couple of people that didn't have any success growing it from store bought roots here. I don't want to purpetuate a myth but would suggest looking for signs of life when picking your ginger, if only to speed things up.
