Self censorship  would be a shame. @Lizzie27 but I know how you feel.

If you log out of the forum and either google or type in gardeners' world forum into the address bar then this forum will open and you can read everything that is written on the open forum. You won't be able to answer a post until you log in again. Personal or identifying details - family, where we live, in fact, anything that could give information about us to others shouldn't be posted.

No, anyone anywhere can read it, in perpetuity. And they are reading, and taking note.

Which is what I mean about the forum space feeling cosy and private, like a pub or someone's living room. 'No one here but us chickens'. But no. Your comments are searchable by Google. There's not a lot less private than that.

That's the point of the thread. It's not just about "us". There's a whole world out there. We should turn around and say hello.

Maybe the forum will morph into what you would like it to be

I'm just describing how I see it working now. Other people will have other perspectives. Maybe they think I'm overblowing certain aspects. Or maybe there are other angles to explore. The mods would have access to more accurate and specific web data. I'm pretty much guessing. Tech bods will have more insight.

I think we already do … just by being here … just because some of us have been here a long time doesn’t mean that we’re unaware and naive … I’m sure you don’t mean it @Fire but I’m feel ever so slightly patronised.

After all, as you say, you’re relatively new, yet you found us and considered it worth your while to stick around … 😊

This is interesting - I started reading it and will revisit tomorrow! (Keep scrolling down, there's a lot more after that first section😊.)

I think it would be a shame if we all started speaking to the world rather than to each other. If the world wants to lurk or join in, that's fine. Apart from the odd new member who accidentally posts their email address, I haven't noticed anyone sharing identifiable information - well not in the threads I frequent anyway. It's got to be easier to sift through the odd bit of banter here to access information than to trawl through Google. And maybe it makes us a seem bit more approachable or at least human

I think you’ve hit the nail squarely on the head @B3. 👍

The whole nature of the forum would change if we posted with the fact that we’re ‘posting for posterity’ in the forefront of our minds.   However the fact that it’s not at the forefront of what we do doesn’t mean that we’re unaware of the nature of a public forum on the internet.
