Plant

I have an Amarylis which has only just finished flowering. We have cut the flower stalk down to the bulb. What should I do now to promote flowering later?

Give it a couple of feeds of tomato feed and keep it growing through spring and summer. It can go outside once the frosts are over. It’ll die down in autumn so you stop watering it then. Bring it inside so it doesn’t get frosted, and then when it’s dry I leave it alone until December when I repot in fresh compost and start it off again.

  • From my one (failed) experience of trying to keep an Amaryllis after flowering, I can also report that, even after the frosts, they really hate to be damp. So it’s best put in an area where there will not be too much water (i.e. rain) on the neck and you are mostly giving water from below. I must have another go as I do love them.
