Tree fern

I have just taken delivery of a 5ft tree fern which is very heavy! How do I take care of it until it can be planted in the ground?

Hello @geoff.fenner - is it a cut trunk or potted with roots and fronds?  When are you planning to plant it?

  • It is a cut trunk bought from a nursery. I am not sure when would be best to plant it! Can it be stored in my garage for example?

There's an excellent video on Todds Botanics website - this helped me last year.  I soaked the trunk thoroughly and planted it the same day it arrived but that was in April.  You'll need to protect the crown from frost with a few handfuls of dry leaves and a few layers of horticultural fleece if frost is forecast.  I wouldn't leave in the garage.  If you can't put it in its permanent position now, I'd sink the trunk about a foot deep into a large pot filled with compost and keep it in a sheltered position outside until you are ready to plant. Here's the link: Buy Dicksonia Tree Ferns UK Delivery (toddsbotanics.co.uk)  Hope this helps.
