Ah thanks …  so, as it is constructed, with the whole thing raised above ground, the ‘heat-resistant basin with hole to leak ash’ will actually provide draught to the base of the fire from the bottom through the holes.  :)

I wouldn't have thought they would be sufficient, but regardless I'm planning on having a small metal pipe or two that provide air underneath into the void below. I had another concern that with the ash still simmering away and a fire on top it could create a loose vacuum since it would be pretty airtight other than the ash holes. The pipes solve this and will provide enough air to burn.

It doesn’t take much … just a small flow of air gets a fire going and keeps the bottom of it alight so much better … you get more heat that way as you can burn good sized logs rather than just sticks  😊

    Hi @danny_ryan95.

Probably a stupid question .... but I'll ask it anyway.
How do you keep it dry when it rains?
It doesn't seem to come with any sort of hood/cover.

So although it can wrap around the whole thing I think it can be used to just go over the top. Would have to sort something out to pin it down but could tuck it under the ledges.

Do you agree that with the stones on all 4 borders of it against the legs, it'll be pretty airtight from below? I can't imagine getting much air through 36.5x30cm of stones.

Just need to find some suitable piping that I can add in that doesn't look too shoddy.

I don’t know … I was commenting on the fire pit as it is designed and made.
To be honest I wouldn’t try to adapt one … I’d either use one designed and made to do the job I want, or get build one myself using some of the many DIY videos etc online. Let someone else solve the problems for you 😊

  • If you’re going to be putting stones/bricks around it, why not just buy firebricks and build one…here’s mine…

(yes I know the patio needs a power wash and a tidy but that’s a job I’ll do when it gets warmer!) :)
