corylus contorta catkins

I have an established twisted hazel whose catkins appear but do not grow very long at all- I live in Yorkshire and wondered if anyone else in the region has experienced a similar problem with twisted hazel catkins?

    Welcome to the forums.
The catkins ( male flowers) at the moment will be short but as spring progresses they should get longer.

    1 and 2. Locally 14th Jan.
3 and 4 .19th April near Melrose Scottish Borders.

  • Yes- mine used to grow long but have suddenly stopped. They start off well but do not become much longer than three inches or so
Thanks folks- glad yours are doing so beautifully 🙂

Coincidentally I was looking at mine this morning (from indoors) and was then distracted. Dark now but I'll show a pic in the morning. I don't think mine get much bigger than 3in though.

Do these have to be a certain age before flowering?
This will be the 2nd Spring since i planted the compact version 'Scooter', and no sign of any catkins yet.

I think 3" is pretty normal for twisted hazel.

Quote www for hazel..."Male catkins are pale yellow and 5–12 cm long, "

The catkins are actually formed in the year before in the autumn and sit on the hazel all winter...only growing in the spring.
So autumn 2021 your plant was just a baby.
Be patient...it will happen when it is old enough/big enough and conditions are right.

Pics below were taken in September. At the same time as the nuts .

    Thanks for the info.

  • Thanks all- reassure that they are expected to be around three inches when in flower - the first few flowerings (which started in the second year fur my tree) must have been flukes: they were huge! Happy nearly spring everyone 🙂
