Sowing snapdragons

I sowed some snapdragon seeds a few weeks ago according to the pack and the GW website, and placed them inside a grow-house with a covered plastic lid. I wondered if anyone’s had any success growing snapdragons from seed this way, as they haven’t germinated yet? Thanks in advance!

There's no warmth in those unfortunately - they really only keep off rain/sleet/snow.
It's early to be sowing seed - beginning of January, unless they have proper heat.
Is that really what it said on the packet?

GW site seems to suggest march sowing? Having said that , i do get self seeded ones that appear when they are ready in spring, so I guess the seed probably survives the cold fine unless wet/waterlogged compost rots it. I'm nowhere as wet or cold as Fairygirl though.

A lot further south than you - I sowed mine last year at the end of February.
A good hoeing is worth two waterings.

PS  .....In my conservatory - so hottish during the day and cool at night.

  • Yes on the packet it says half way through January is okay. (I also sowed some aquilegia at the same time). I’m in the south and have a conservatory too, so would it be worth bringing them in?
  • Also, if I just left them would they germinate okay when the weather gets warmer?

It depends on what room you have for growing them on, if they all germinate, until they can go outside. If you have room in your conservatory, that's probably better.
Aquilegias are pretty easy though - and can go out earlier as they're hardy  :)

They might germinate if left - but just keep an eye on them. Dampness is often the biggest enemy for any seed. They'll always be slow to germinate at this time of year in cooler climates, and there's also the risk of them just not germinating at all if they're too wet, and they just rot  :)
Self seeding is a bit different from actively sowing seed too, and depends on your climate and conditions. It's why lots of plants don't readily do it here.  :)

  • My seed packet also said I could sow now. I sowed them in a little tray, covered the tray and placed it on a South facing window. Germinated very quickly for me (a few days). Maybe they just need more warmth?
  • Great thanks for your help 🙂 I’ll bring them inside and keep my fingers crossed!
