I'd avoid paving if the site's shady though. Lethal in winter.  :)
I have landed on my butt a few times this winter period on the patio 😆

I appreciate you may not want gravel for the reasons you mention. You'll just have  to consider what suits your needs best.  :)
A combination of paving/gravel might work - I think someone already mentioned that. If the synthetic grass is best, that's what you should do. It's easy for others to judge, but I'm sure you've looked at the options and the care etc, and it's what you require for your plot that matters.  :)

I know a lot of dog owners who've had fake grass and they're all extremely pleased. My next sort neighbour has it too, and it looks smart. You have to lay artificial grass on a decent subbase, so you'll have to remove the turf and dig down 4-6". I would probably get professionals in.

However for me personally, I would rather use gravel surfacing because of the lower cost, more natural look and less use of plastics. 20mm slate chippings are probably the most stable under foot and most comfortable for dogs and humans.

I know a few dog owners who went to the effort of putting in artificial grass - no small effort - then found that removing dog excretions from the fake grass was too much effort for them.

I guess the message was that there is no easy route, all options require a similar level of maintenance.

ah yes normal fed dry food dogs I can see why it would be an issue on AF grass as poops are softer and sloppier ours are raw fed and due to the bone content their poops are much harder than regular fed dogs it's like a pellet and solid so extremely easy to clean up but we walk that regular that they don't mess as often in the garden 😁
  • Yes I am trying not to offend anyone or disregard advise but I am pretty much set on AF grass I have tried many different options over the years and feel it's best for our situation and family, environmental OK it's not the best but this will be placed on membrane then mot then sand of a good deep layer not directly onto soil

There will be drainage around the outside with a border as the boys pee up the fences around the outside😬

    Thank you

    Indeed @gemma.threadgoldPB7Z1krJ :)
The prep is the most important bit - no matter what the end result is going to be. I have a friend who put in artificial grass - same reasons as you - but the people who laid it cut corners and there are now some problems with it sinking etc. The base wasn't properly consolidated. She's had to get it lifted and sorted in places which is a pain.

    Good luck with it  :)

Personally I'd rather just patio the whole lawn instead of artificial grass.

If your dogs  pee and mess on it, it's a pain to clean and smells. Over time it won't look the same as when you bought it new and will ultimately need replacing one day which will cost you. It will fade and curl like someone  else mentioned.

You could dig out beds or build raised beds around the perimeter of the fence. Just my 2p.

Its also bad for the environment due to the fact that it's not bio degradable and will just  end up in a landfill one day. We should all be doing our part to buy less plastic.....

Also gets very hot on yours and your dogs feet and they look a bit tacky in my opinion.

Or just dig it all over and turn it into a fruit and veg plot!

I have neighbours who have dogs and are entirely delighted with their plastic grass over the last ten years and would never consider going back.

I would stick to answering the OP's questions.

Bossy are we? As I said, I just added my 2p. I wasn't rude.

Here's another 2p, artificial grass can't or won't ever be recycled
