Bare rooted or potted

I want to replace a very old standard rose with another one, but,
1, is it wise to put in the same place?
2, bare rooted now or potted later?
3, which growers are best, I am not far from Peter Beales my last one was from there over 10 years ago.
Any advice accepted, thank you

Hello @widgetwilk ann, in answer to your queries:

    1. Not advisable because of the possiblity of rose replant disease.
    2. Bare root will be cheaper and will grow just as well at this time of year, provided the ground is not waterlogged or frozen.
    3. Peter Beales is an excellent supplier - you can select your plant on site.

David Austin roses are also well regarded, widely available at good garden centres and online.  Hope this helps.

Trevor White currently have a 50% discount on potted roses.

Some people recommend that if you want to plant a rose in a place that had a rose before, you could try using a carboard wine box or similar in the ground. Take out the soil where the old rose was. Add new soil in, add soil to the box and fill with new soil/manure. Get your rose, add mycorrhizal fungi (which important in this process) and plant the rose in the box and water well. The idea is that the rose grows its roots into the box and by the time it breaks out, the nematodes in the soil will have changed and not damage the rose.

  • Thank you, looks like are rooted is best, and I have heard about the planing it in a cardboard box, good idea, thanks for all that advice,
will look at Trevor White, don't know that one.
