Strawberries

I would like to start growing strawberries. I've been trying to find one of those like plant pots with cut out bits down it that I've seen. Are they good or should I be looking at something else. Thank you

    Personally we don't like them. We find them difficult to water, as the water tends to pour out over the top, rather than going down to the plants at the side of the pot. The soil also often tends to be washed out of the holes around the side of the pot (when you are watering). I also find the plants get very congested when they are at full size, and this doesn't provide adequate ventilation (so pests and diseases are more common).

    If you don't want to plant in the ground, the long, narrow plastic troughs that you can get in garden centres are probably better. I would put no more than 3-4 plants per trough. You'll get a better crop if you don't cram too many in.

    Remember to net them against Squirrels/Birds!

    I agree - they're useless. Even with the amount of rain we get here, they dry out. The terracotta ones [and they're mostly that] also absorb moisture which is bad for strawbs.
    Better in pots/troughs or similar if you have nowhere in the ground that's suitable.  :)
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    Our strawberries did ok in one, but it exploded in the frost a year ago.

    They did a lot better in the ground though so multi hole pots probs probably not worth it.
