What would you buy with these?

While doing some sorting out today, I found £40 of national garden vouchers, which were a Christmas gift to us from family a while ago. Luckily, still in date.

My trips to garden centres usually involve checking the bank balance before I go!!

So, what can/should we buy with our £40 vouchers? And what would you buy?

I'd buy something like containers or troughs if they need to be used soon.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

That's a nice surprise ! I would also go for something like a pot, it can act as a reminder of the family who bought them for you (assuming you want to be reminded :) ).

You could head down the practical route and go for tools, gloves etc. Maybe a nice shrub ?
Bear in mind that some garden centres have different rules when it comes to these vouchers if you don't spend it all in one go.

I've just been to my local GC this morning.  How about a Hellebore for some winter colour?  Or, you can never have too much compost and dahlia bulbs are now in stock!
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

Seeds! .. just think how many you could buy.
Also, try plant fairs or nurseries - generally a little cheaper than GC's.
If you do shop at at the GC though, have a look at the sale section (Death Row!). They often sell off perennials at this time of year that are merely dormant or plants that, with a simple prune & a water, will recover quite happily.

    That's a lovely surprise, @ Penny-Forthem. I think I would buy a winter-scented plant, such as one of these
    1. Viburnum x bodnantense (arrowwood)
    2. Hamamelis (witch hazel)
    3. Chimonanthus praecox (wintersweet)
    4. Mahonia (Oregon grape)
    5. Sarcococca (Sweet box)
And put it in a pot by the door, to be enjoyed by yourself and of course, hungry bees and moths.

Probably some Rodney Davey group hellebores or two (?) nice climbing roses.

  • We went to our local GC (not part of the voucher scheme) and I was very taken with the hellebores, but we have no place for them as I'd want to see them from the house.
    Seeds I have a'plenty!
    Always want a Hamamelis.
Our next garden will have that and hellebores!
I did treat myself to a lovely soft scarf, ostensibly for dog walking, but just fell in love with the colours. Not given to spontaneous purchases (unless plants!)

Something you've always fancied but could not afford or justify the cost of.

Why don't you just go to the GC, have a good look round and buy what you fancy. I would probably buy roses.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
