Thanks for the comments @GardenerSuze you may have convinced me about the green spire it is very nice. Is it slow growing? Wondering what size to order as would like a 40cm high plant ASAP
RHS website states that green spire grows 0.5 to a metre over 2 to 5 years. Spread 0.1 to 0.5 m. The tops can be pruned and I would wear gloves.. Gardening can be a slow process at times and the slower a plant grows the longer the nursery has to care for it .That is why you may find it expensive as you say you are on a budget. There is also E Jean Hughes and E Green Rocket but I think they have similar growth rate
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
It's simple. If you have the money, you can buy more mature plants. A mature plant [ie one in a 2 litre pot approx] is going to be in the region of £10 or more, depending on where you get it. That would be around the 30 - 40 cm size. Postage on top of that unless you can get it locally, and a GC will always be dearer than a nursery. In some instances, smaller plants establish more quickly, but a plant in a 2 litre pot is pretty straightforward, as long as it has a suitable growing medium etc. Smaller plants are cheaper, and then you'll have to wait.
That's how gardening works
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
