  According to this, a cool shaded frost free place at around 5 degrees is the ideal spot. If you have a porch ,that might be suitable.

  I don't think it's necessary to keep them in the dark.

  Thanks, AnniD - I have a scullery at the back of the house that's unheated and gets only a small amount of light as there's only a small window - I'll try them there.
