Poor Brussel Sprout crop

I have had a poor crop from Brussel Sprouts again this year, the plants start off from seed well, grow to a reasonable height but only produce small sprouts this has happened over the last three seasons. They are fed and watered well. I have spoken to several people on my allotments and other allotment holders in a different area and we have the same outcome even though different seed suppliers have been used, has anybody else experienced this and have an explanation?

Maybe give up growing brussel sprouts!!!  I have the same problem with purple sprouting broccoli - huge prolific plants, really beautiful, but not a sprout in sight.  I grow kale, broccoli and cauliflower successfully.

I am NOT growing purple sprouting broccoli next winter!  So there!!
A good hoeing is worth two waterings.

I thought that last year tui but then I waited until late March/April and they sprouted. I'd been giving up on them too soon  :o

  • We have no success for many years but have decided to have another go this year as we do love sprouts.
I think they take so much longer than we think and then we give up.
    Here's hoping for a sprout year 2022.
  • All brassicas are hungry feeders,  well maured ground dressed with seaweed pellets (very slow acting) will help. The other thing I found is use rockdust or remin, same thing.  Crushed volcanic rocks helps remineralise the soil.  I had several seasons where cabbage etc did not produce tight hearts,  since using remin they are great. I just mix a little into the soil of each planting hole when I plant out ( about 1/3 to a 1/2 of a yoghurt carton) .

@ColinA. What soil do you have,  if it’s acidic you’ll need to lime your ground,  if you already have,  then I haven’t a clue. 🙂

I have good soil and it has been limed I feed when planting with chicken manure pellets and weekly during growing season all brassicas are fed with liquid comfrey.
