I put the tumble dryer fluff (different colours) in a bird box a day or so ago to keep the birds warmer if they were roosting and was most amused to see that a bird (blue tit?) has picked out all the white fluff and dropped it on the ground.

  • Years ago I had some zebra finches in a cage and I went to a safari park - there was lots of chunks of camel fur all over the place so I took some home for my birds to make a nest with.  But one of them got it all tangled on its feet and it was quite tightly bound, very difficult to remove, but I was worried it would cut off circulation.  I didn't use anything similar after that.

I never put the fluff from the tumble drier out for them. It looks as though it would be brilliant for nest material, but I think the chemicals still lingering in it could be detrimental.   :/

We have plenty of cat fur (from brushing the grumpy old man-cat) but when I tried leaving it out, the birds weren't interested. They seem to prefer the coir fibres from my hanging basket liners.

Ive got a couple of old suet block feeders to use for nesting material offerings this year. Ive got dog hair, clean sheeps wool, some wood curls (hamper packaging) and ive left fallen leaves and twig prunings about that the robin likes. When should i put material out?

No matter what I put out ,hair brush stuff ,dog or horse hair the birds still take the liners from my baskets ! I think they’re just awkward round here !
