Sweet pea sowing

I brought some sweet pea seeds back before Christmas but never got round to sowing them. I plan to sow them in toilet roll inner tubes so I don’t disturb the roots, but when would be the best time to do this? I also intend to leave them in an outdoor cold frame/greenhouse, will this be okay? Any advice would be great

    Depends where you are.
I normally sow my second lot in early February.
How can you lie there and think of England

  • March will be plenty soon enough, but you can sow some later too if you wish to keep you going into autumn.
They will be fine in the greenhouse/coldframe providing you don't have mice. They love to dig down and eat the seeds and there is little more disheartening than finding a trayful of healthy sprouts lying like so much fallen timber. I have to sow mine on a high table with unclimbable, thin legs. I expect them to learn to abseil at some point!!

Mid March for mine - sometimes in the growhouse [small greenhouse] sometimes the kitchen windowsill, depending on how cold March is. Too cold here for them to germinate before that without heat, which is then counter productive.

They shouldn't be cossetted in any way, and it should ideally take them around two to three weeks to germinate. Then you need to work out the best time to plant out.
For me, it's not worth doing that any earlier than May. April is too cold for them to do anything.  :)
The only way to find what works for you is to experiment.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
