    Not gravel: you will spill bits of compost,  leaves will fall and assorted detritus will settle and be impossible to clear. Solid slabs are better and you won't need the membrane.

    Oh, hadn't thought of that! Will seedlings be ok in there as I start sowing them February onwards. Always had the indoors before on window ledge.

    Depends which seeds. Have a look at the instructions on the packets. That will specify the temperature. If you have half hardies they will need heating as seedlings, too, so check carefully. The packets don't always warn you about growing on.
