Happy New Year to one and all. Sowing Onions.

Traditionally, New Years Day is the day one sows ones onions. So I was told by a venerable, very successful exhibition level veg. grower. I have followed his advice for many years and although I do not aspire to exhibition standard onions, I always have decent crops.
It is very satisfying to start the year with some positive activity.

  • I am hoping to grow onions from seed, so I better get on with it! I have had no real success with onions when I get them in the ground. They dont seem to bulb up - I get good green tops, but very small bulbs. Any advice on the best growing conditions/care of them once in the ground?

Start with sets?  The element of risk is much reduced.
  • I do not think onions grown from sets store so well. I have tried sets and have not had much success.

Fair point, Joyce.  There are certainly casualties with sets.
