Newbie Looking for Book Recommendations

Hi everyone,

I am new to this Forum. My wife and in-laws are planning to make a move to the countryside of continental Croatia and start living off the land. I am currently reading through Eliot Coleman's Four-Season harvest, and I am very inspired by the concept of growing throughout the year and making use of cold frames.

In this connection I am wondering about what's possible to grow in that particular climate, which is similar to Southern France, when to grow and harvest the particular plants, vegs and herbs and what each needs to optimally thrive. Do you have some specific Bible or encyclopedia that you turn to for continuous inspiration and reference in this connection?

Thanks in advance,

Hi @copenhagenmonk. I'm from Croatia and if I can help you just say. To which part of Croatia you want to move? I'm from Adriatic coast, but I have my small farm and I'm growing veggies and fruits beside my job at school. I hope that you will be pleased to come over here.

Welcome to the forum copenhagenmonk. Take it from me, Ante is a superb vegetable grower and posts lots of picture of his produce to make us all jealous (and hungry!). I hope that you enjoy being on the forum as much as we all do.

Hi Ante. Thanks for your openness and willingness to help.

We are moving into a very picturesque setting in a small isolate village near Daruvar.

    Thanks for the warm welcome.

We are looking forward to learning from a lot of seasoned gardeners.

Oh @copenhagenmonk, you are going to move in the middle of Croatian granary. Thick and black soil, and large scale farmers in that part mostly grow all kind of grains, tobacco, cabbage, sunflower and some other cultures. Homemade products and eco grown veggies are in demand last few years
Have a nice evening and have fun tonight. Please, be free to ask anything and I will help if I can.

Yes. We heard the soil is good. We are not planning to make any business but plan to become gradually self-sufficient. There's a lot of books out there, and I was hoping you could help me finding a complete reference, a sort of Encyclopedia of all the plants and herbs that can be grown in the climate, as well as how to best take care of each plant.

    In the meantime:-

Readers Digest 'Food From Your Garden' 1977 and

    'Vegetable Growing' by Dr W E Shewell-Cooper 1972

You should find both on Amazon etc.

    Thanks for the recommendations.

I am thinking very much in terms of alternative possibilities.

Let me give some examples to clarify. My family is very much into Indian vegetarian cooking and Ayurveda and in that connection there’s a few key ingredients that I am wondering if it’s possible to grow ourselves in the God-given circumstances.

    Grains, Seeds and Beans
    Mung Dahl
    Sesame Seeds
    Basmati Rice
    Black Rice

    Spices
    Fenugreek
    Cumin
    Turmeric
    Fennel
    Mustard Seeds
    Curry Leaves
    Black pepper

Are these included in the above mentioned literatures? I assume growing these would be possible by lending mother nature a helping hand, creating microclimates and so forth. So when I am looking for a book of references on how to take care of each plant, when to grow, when to harvest and so forth. I am envisioning a Encyclopedia on my shelf that would include these exotic specimens. Does anyone have some thoughts in that regard?

The internet is an excellent resource for finding out about the necessary growing conditions for all the things you mention in your 'to grow' lists but unless you have a paddy field I think the growing of rice may be a bit problematic.
