Can anyone tell me if this is treatable? Black spots on tree bark

Hi,
Ive noticed this on my potted acer and also a planter magnolia. Does anyone have any idea what it is? Both trees have flowered but didn’t look too happy this season. Is there anything I can do?
Thanks in advance

there's a lot of verticillium wilt this year, but I'm not sure that's the trouble with yours

The wood looks dead, have you tried snapping or cutting a piece off to see if it's living wood or scraping the bark with your fingernail?  The black spots look like a type of fungus.

I did ensure it had some life in it before posting. Some branches are completely dead you are right, but there is still some life in it in places so I was hoping I might be able to salvage it. The acer isn’t as far gone so I was hoping a hive mind might give me a solution! I agree I think whatever it is is taking it over and it’s dying. As they are dormant now I’ll just wait and see what they do in Spring. Such a shame both are such beautiful specimens normally!

I think that's all you can do at the moment, wait until spring. You might never know what the cause of your shrubs appears to be suffering.
