Physalis bare root

Hi- I have some physalis bare roots that look like just 2 inch long sections of root with no obvious top or bottom- any idea how I plant? Horizontally or vertically?

    I'd plant them horizontally and let them sort themselves out.
    In London. Keen but lazy.
