problem with stored lilies

We decided that the lilies were in the wrong place so at the end of last season I lifted them dried them off and stored them in a large container to be replanted next spring.  The lilies are the large variety about 800mmish high, stored with a generous helping of compost in an outside shed in the dark.  We live near the south coast so frosts are rare and generally quite mild.
I checked them today and they've started to put out some white shoots.  I haven't looked closely so can't tell if they're roots or top growth.  My question is what to do with them?  We'll be missing for a couple of months from early January and don't want to lose them as they're particularly nice plants.  Any suggestions?

Lillies do not store well, they would be better off being planted.

I agree. They'd have been better just potted up and left somewhere outside until you have a spot for them. You can certainly do that now.

They're mostly very  hardy, with just a few exceptions. If it's excessively wet, you can keep them under the house eaves or similar. I do that with any of mine which are permanently potted, because of the climate here.  :)

  • Thanks for the advice.  I can prepare the area and put them in next week, so hopefully all will be OK

That should be fine @kevtams - a nice well draining site.

Have a good Christmas too   :)
