my kids don't buy me anything.
I figure there's no point in them spending money they can't afford buying me something I probably don't need .
I tell them to spend the money they WOULD have spent on my, buying something for themselves .

    A gold spade from Niwaki
The Horologicon and The Etymologicon by Mark Forsyth
    A print by Clare Leighton
A Year Unfolding by Angela Harding (a near neighbour of mine)
    A Toupie de Comptoir (Pernod)
A glass apple sculpture by Michael Hunter
A glass sculpture by Phil Vickery

I have all of these except the spade. You can always find room for art and books.

Old school DVD, or CD by a favourite artist ? Chocolates (expensive ones, natch). Scarf, selected from the store's website with strict instructions as to colour.
Can you go with him to a GC ? Can your daughter help to instruct him.? Maybe you could transfer one of her presents to him, if you see what l mean.
What do you do when you're not gardening? (And l don't mean housework and other soul destroying stuff 😁)

Joint account. That's the cash issue. I can help myself.
Something for him to wrap is what's needed..
I think I'll go with get whatever you like but don't spend more than X unless someone comes up with a better idea.
Although I tried that once and ended up with a box of lotions and potions that made me itch.

Bridgedale socks. Much much too expensive to buy for yourself but a little piece of heaven to wear. I've asked for them enough times now that I get to wear some every day 😉

We always had a joint account but I don't know if it was prudence I always felt a wee bit guilty spending money on the garden. Didn't stop me mind you. He gave me an IOU unlimited for the garden the Christmas before he died to spend on the new garden. That was 7 years ago and I'm still spending and not a shred of guilt.

  • We both have birthdays near Christmas so we just give each other little token gifts and put the rest of the money to treat ourselves to a few days away somewhere in the spring. We start planning it over the Christmas holiday… choosing where to go … we we think a few days in a cottage right on the Suffolk coast would be good, late March/early April ish.
