Overgrown Hardy Fuschia

Hello, we have recently moved into a new home and inherited a beautiful garden. The garden path is completely overwhelmed by some hardy fuschias and I have read that I can't cut them back until after the frosts have finished. Is there anything I can do or do I need to just be patient and wait until spring?

Main pruning is done in spring but that’s to give a bit of frost protection to emerging buds. I have hardy fuchsias which edge a path. The overhanging branches have already been cut back, we do that most years and haven’t had any reshooting problems. I suppose it depends on how low temperatures fall in your area. I’m NE England so it’s usually cold and damp with not too many hard frosts, fingers crossed.

It won't hurt to trim back what's overhanging the path now, and then prune them hard in spring (close to ground level if you like) and they'll regenerate and flower late summer-autumn.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • Awesome, thank you both! They have been trimmed so we can actually use the path now (hurray!) and will get a good trimming back come spring time :)
