Bare Root Alstroemerias

Hi
I received some bare root Alstroemerias, which seem to be part of the tuber, just not sure whether to plant standing up or lying down (the roots I mean, not me!), some do seem to have started grow at one end.

I see no one has answered your query @Gary_L67.
I've never bought them bare root, but I doubt it would make too much difference what you did.
I'd be inclined to lay them flat [horizontal] because that new growth will grow upwards/downwards depending on whether it's shoots or roots. Probably roots.

I'm sure someone will confirm if that's correct though, and advise better if not .  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I literally inherited some alstro tubers a couple of years ago and just lay them flat as you said Fairygirl. They sorted themselves out and grew.

  • Thanks, I have gone with the horizontal, see what happens.
