Change of fence colour - is black a good idea?

  • That looks really good, especially the first picture. It really makes the plants stand out. I would love to paint our fence black but my wife is dead against it and prefers the natural wood finish. I have planted the seed though and if I work on her over the years she may get fed up and give me the ok to paint ours black too, one day 🤞

Thank you @Emptyheadtime, I spent ages thinking about this!  I do like the look of a natural faded wood fence though.  My fence had four stretches of different coloured woods when I moved here so painting was the best bet, but I chose the wrong colour twice! Good luck!

  • I have found that a mid to dark green shows of plants well. Given that so many plants contain green, and that green is supposed to be a relaxing colour, I feel it helps to produce the effect of relaxation. In my opinion, green helps to make the garden extend beyond the plants, rather than producing the effect of the barrier.
Ultimately, it's all down to personal choice. A forest green works for me.

I did my fence and shed forest green for a change but it didn't suit my garden so had to re-paint the whole lot. Plenty of cursing.

I tried forest green too @Uff!  It was the first colour I used on my fence.  I found it difficult because it looked gloomy and didn't provide sufficient contrast for natural greens.  I lived with it for a couple of years but cursed it every day! Here's some more photos to show how black works magic, but that's a matter of opinion!

So do I @Fire, especially when it bleaches to that driftwood look!

  • i love a black fence this year we recently painted ours a really deep grey that we bought from victory colours, the name of the paint was Dick Turpin No. 20, reall glad we went with the decision of a darker fence colour
  • Though the black fence looks good but I am not a big fan. I love grey and dark brown ones.
