Should I be pruning this Rose?

Hello everyone,

I bought the rambling rose Crimson Shower from David Austin last year. It has grown very well this year and now the leaves seem to be going yellow. I phoned David Austin to ask about pruning and they said it probably won’t need too much pruning in the first year and said that it flowers on old growth.

Anyway here is the rose. What would you recommend? Should I just leave it as is?

thanks,

Ed

That looks perfectly fine to me. You should get good advice from the grower and they are a trusted firm. Roses lose their leaves in winter.

Ramblers flower on old growth, so only remove any dead (brown) or damaged branches, otherwise its fine this year.

Dont worry about the leaves, they do go yellow before they drop in winter, and possibly a touch of blackspot this late, nothing to worry about. Id just clear them away when they have fallen, even pick off the yellow ones if you choose. Bin them not compost just to make sure any blackspot etc dosent spread.
  • Thank you very much for the advice everyone. I do have black spot on some of the leaves so hearing your response is very pleasing. I’ll clear them away when they drop.

    Thanks again.
