Over Wintering Question

Hi, I have a number of.plants that I'd love to get some over wintering advice on if there is anyone out there with the knowledge.

Canna Roi Humbert - should I cut this right down to soil level and store under cover?

Hibiscus Old Yella (swamp mallow) - should I cut this back from its 6ft height down to about 1 ft? I think it is hardy and should survive outside.

White passion flower - this spans a fence with multiple arms across 10 ft each side of the stem. Should I cut this back or let it stay where it is over winter?

Any help much appreciated.

Sure I'll have more questions soon.

Can't really give you advice unless we know where you are and whether you have a greenhouse.

Canna root need storing frost free, and only just damp or it will rot .

Hibiscus and passion flower I would prune in Spring and then give it a good feed.
  • Hello … I’m on the southern edge of Norwich. We usually put cannas in the garage over winter but we have one huge one in a container that we can’t shift without doing our backs in.

Last winter we left it in the most sheltered corner by the house wall and surrounded it with hardy shrubs and plants in pots and garden furniture to keep the frost away from the roots … it survived and flowered well this year.

So, if you can, I would put it in a garage or shed but if you can’t then cross your fingers, protect it as best you can and hope for a mild winter. 🤞

  • Thanks for the advice. Do you also cut the tall stem down as well? Mine is about 6ft tall.
  • I leave it to die off and then cut it back. 😊 It’s also worth checking for slugs and snails hiding in the foliage just so they don’t overwinter in luxury 😠
