Orchid leaves turning brown and spotting

Hi all, two of the bottom leaves on my moth orchid are turning brown and have multiple halo spots on them. What could be the cause and how to treat it please? Bacteria infection? It's sitting on a windowsill which doesn't get direct sunlight. The area is not heated. Thanks!

Hope @Nanny Beach can share some thoughts please?

Bark is better than moss as a planting medium. It maybe holding onto too much water.

Thanks! I only have moss at the top of the pot, below is all orchid potting mix, and the roots seem to be a healthy green colour too. But will definitely reduce watering a bit and see.

Hello msq, there are around 30 orchid viruses, none of which looks exactly like your leaves. They normally affect Dendrobium and odontoglossum. I have never had one myself. You could try removing the lower leaves, make sure you clean any tools, scissors, hands,so as not to spread if it is a virus. I'm visiting a specialist orchid nursery Friday will show them the pictures

Found out the nursery isn't open to the public Fridays, from their website, but I couldn't get a reply on the phone either mobile or landline today
I will keep trying because they have a specialist scented orchid I wanted to get my hubby for Christmas.

Thanks! No worries. I've cut off the bottom leaves just in case. Still curious to find out what exactly was the cause, and fingers crossed the other leaves would not get it...

My daughter collected hubbies orchid, Christmas present.  She showed,The chap (Lawrence Hobbs, Crawley down) said its not a virus, nothing to worry about, looks like something has been splashed on the leaves. This is a whole sale orchid only nursery,so one imagines he is reliable

Thank you so much @Nanny Beach Great to know that nothing is wrong. I've moved it to a warmer room and so far so good. Hope you and your family have a happy Christmas!

  • In my opinion, this is still a virus. Set apart from the collection and photograph the leaves. And after a while compare with the photo. If the spots do not grow, then everything is in order. If they grow, the plant must be destroyed.
