Strange growths on pumpkin

Hi,
We had our first successful home grown pumpkin this year which we’ve had on the side waiting to be cooked for a few months. A few weeks ago we spotted a couple of these slug looking growths on the skin, they look like insects but don’t seem to move or eat the skin or anything. We removed them, cleaned the pumpkin and put it back on the side. We’ve just taken it down again to cook today and there are now dozens of them clustered around the base. Has anyone come across these before? Any help much appreciated, thanks!

They look very much like scale insects, but not heard of them on a pumpkin before.
If you lift one of the shells and there's 'cotton wool' underneath then it's scale insects, just brush them off. I doubt they have done any damage

Yep they’re definitely scale insects, thanks very much for helping to identify! Relieved they’re not some kind of alien fungus we need to be worried about
