Wormwood

I have planted a few artemisia seeds and they have sprouted. I am growing them indoors. Will they continue to grow and survive the winter? Or will the seedlings die? I have got grow lights on them at the moment.
Adam.

If you can keep them going over winter with the light and they don't get too leggy then there's no reason why they shouldn't survive.
You don't want them getting too warm which will encourage growth, just try and keep them ticking over until spring.
Good luck and I hope your other unusual plants are doing well too :)

  • Cheers pete. Yeah. I have had a very good season with my nightshades. Collected quite a lot of seeds for next year. Next year I want to grow mandrake.
  • Call me a bit of a herbalist if you will. They are still very small. Should they grow bigger? What's the standard time that it takes for them to grow?

    A very specialist herbalist :)

Don't expect too much from them for the time being, just keep them well-lit, not too damp and not too warm. If they survive the winter they should start growing well as Spring arrives.

I've never grown artemisia from seed but I do have several of them around the garden.
I bought one years ago and took cuttings which are easy. Then planted out the cuttings.
A cutting I took about 18 months ago, is now about a 30cm tall/wide plant.
The leaves all die off over winter leaving the bare stems.
The original one I bought grows to about 1m+ wide each year.
In spring tiny new shoots appear from the base of the bare stems and I cut the bare stems right back to where the new shoots have appeared near the base of the plant, so my 1m plant shrinks to about 25cm. The new shoots grow quickly and I soon have a 1m plant again.
