Maranta stems turning yellow

Hi there, I've had this maranta for a couple of years and it's been the most reliable little house plant. Though now it has sprawled somewhat and become rather leggy. I've noticed that one of the longer stems has started to turn yellow progressing towards the leaves. The leaves themselves are fine! Does anyone know what the cause might be? I've recently moved into a new house, the leaves show some irritation at the new lack of humidity but I don't know what's upsetting the stem!

  • Not that easy to see from your photo but isn't the yellow stem simply a dead stem ?  If so, follow it back to base and if there is growth cut above that. If no growth, simply discard.
Perhaps the change of location means it isn't getting the light it needs ? Needs re potting ?  You should be looking for growth from the base rather than just long lanky stems.

It does look like this stem has died, so I'd remove it as @philippasmith2 says.  Also check your watering regime, these plants are quite sensitive to chemicals in tap water.  Use filtered water, distllled water or rainwater and keep the compost moist but not wet.  Your plant has a sprawling habit which is natural as it ages.  You could try repotting it in spring, using a wide rather than deep pot like the one it is in already, to give it a boost.  Start a daily misting regime too.  The efficacy of this is debatable but I find it helps other houseplants that enjoy higher humidity - this is more important over winter when central heating reduces the level of humidity in a typical house.  This GW care guide may also help you: Prayer Plant: Growing and Caring for Prayer Plants - BBC Gardeners' World Magazine (gardenersworld.com)
