rooted from bunch of flowers

This came with a bunch of flowers  and has rooted, it really just looks like a small cabbage, is that what it is and can I plant it in the garden in this weather? seems a waste not to give it a go but thought I would seek advice first.

It is a small ornamental cabbage … you can plant it if you like … it might be hardy through the winter but it might be killed by the frosts as we don’t know the variety.

If it grows and survives the attention of slugs and caterpillars  it’ll put up a flower stalk next year … it’ll have small  four-petalled white or yellow flowers a bit like the ones you see in fields of oilseed rape … probably quite attractive to pollinating insects. Then, as it’s a biennial in its second year, its life will be over and having set seed it’ll die.

If the seed ripens you can collect some and sow it and grow some more …

  • thanks for that, I shall plant it and see, although we do have plenty of snails and slugs so it may just be their food.
