compost for a truffle tree

morning guys!!
bought a truffle tree for my hubby from the tree present company.now I know the chances of us getting a truffle are very low...in about 8 years we might get a nice looking tree..but I'm looking at the compost and it's very confusing!I think we have to make our own and it's the ph level to look at..has anyone tried to make their own compost for truffles?!I've looked online and it seems to be add lime, alkaline soil

Then I’d use John Innes No 3 loam-based potting medium
… it’s basically a hazel and that’ll have all it needs for now … and then when you plant it out in the ground hopefully you’ll have a garden with alkaline soil … you can add lots of leaf mould to the planting site and that should suit it down to the ground 😉

A hazel is a lovely tree, but whether you’ll get truffles or not 🤷‍♀️

  • I thought truffles were a type of fungi which grow underground. I have never heard of a rtuffle tree. How big do they grow?
  • thanks dove from above!it's just a bit of fun for hubby.the tree comes with its own particular compost.i doubt if we will ever get any truffles but hopefully we should get a tree.hes now started to look at a training place where you can take your dog..the dog must like treats as a reward!!😂😂
  • Yes @Joyce Goldenlily truffles are an underground fungi … it grows in association with hazels amongst other trees. Presumably this hazel bush has been grown in soil that has been inoculated with truffle spores … thus increasing the likelihood of the fungi developing in the future … otherwise it seems a lot to pay for a gift wrapped hazel bush.
I know there are some farmers who are trying this on a larger scale but not sure if they’ve had any success. It’s a pretty long term project.
