Replanting strawberries. When?

My strawberries are all grown in long narrow planters and are now root bound. I was ill when they should have been sorted , old ones binned and and the younger ones replanted. Can I still do them in Spring?

So long as the soil is workable and not claggy or frozen you can plant them anytime from now up until early spring.
    They're very tough plants

  • Thanks. They will be going in fresh compost in the planters but not yet- It's raining heavily LOL with gigantic snowflakes.

Judging by their survival in my garden, they'd be a contender in a Hardiest Plant in the World contest :D

  • Yep, thought I'd lost them last year when they were bone dry for weeks  but they bounced back although they didn't have many runners this year.

They're pretty indestructible @norderhove, and can survive for ages without water, but also don't mind how much water they get either. They also don't mind frost, ice or snow, even when they're little plants/runners in tiny pots.
What they do need when they're back into growth in spring, is plenty of nutrition and moisture if you want to keep them healthy and growing well.
They should produce plenty of runners if they're healthy, and if they aren't past their best in terms of age. Once they get beyond three or four years, they're less productive, which is why it pays to keep taking runners to create new stock.  :)

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • I always replace them after 3 years and repot all the younger ones. MY friend down south had barely any runners last year either. I have plenty of potted runners from last year that I couldn't plant out because of illness. Odd thing was that they fruited really well this year. Mayb they put  everything into fruit rather than runners. They do now badly need replanting if I can  manage it if it ever stops freezing at night.. Otherwise they  will have to wait until about April.
