It looks like an Aloe vera. The small one at the side can be gently removed(it's known as a pup). They often already have roots on and can be potted straight into a gritty compost and grown on.
Thank you for your response. I was wondering what type of aloe it was and I was specifically wondering if the top portion could be plucked off and planted. It is starting to tip over. It is wobbly and I don't know what to do about that!!
Agree with Aloe vera but I think it needs rather more natural light than you are giving it at the moment. They should grow into quite "chubby" plants but yours is looking for light - hence the elongated growth. As said above, the pups are the easiest form of propagating these plants but will still need a better position to grow on successfully
Thank you for your post. I have it on a bay window sill and I really don't have a better location. It is a south facing window. I will have to see if I can create a new location somehow or just get used to a scrawny aloe!
It's not always easy to find the right location at this time of year is it ? However, looking at some of the images posted on SM, it's the current fashion to be tall and thin so perhaps your Aloe is just following the trend
