I have no idea how old it was but it has disappeared, no idea what happened to it.
They aren't the longest lived tree, 20-30 years in the right conditions, so it could have been old age. It's perhaps more likely that it was cut down by a bad winter and although they can regrow from the roots, it might have been taken out.
There was a beauty in the quadrangle of St Luke’s College in Exeter. Well sheltered by the walls of the building. Don’t know if it’s still there, but it did inspire me to want one.
