Starting Thalictrum from seed

Hi. I am reading conflicting advice on starting Thalictrum from seed. I have both T. aquifolium and T. rochebrunianum. I've been told to soak seed for up to 48 hours, use bottom heat, don't use heat- but start outside, and since I have never had a huge success numbers wise germinating this seed, I am willing to concede that I don't know the best way. I have freshly collected seed, I am surmising winter sowing (I'm in the Pacific NorthWest of Canada), ie similar to England's climate), may be the best.

This is what the seed sowing data base recommends
Thalictrum aquilegifolium, chelidonii, dasycarpum, dipterocarpum, flavum, foetidum, lucidum, minus, revoltum, and rochebrunianum , Sow at 20ºC (68ºF), if no germination in 3-4 wks, move to -4 to +4ºC (24-39ºF) for 2-4 wks

Thanks Zenjeff. That's the info that I've been using for years ( with very low germination rates). On this site, and others, many growers recommend starting it cooler/outside. I was wondering what people who have had success growing Thalictrum from seed have done.

I have grown some thalictrum from seed taken from bought plants. Aquilegifolium and one I can't spell - delva something. I put them into seed compost immediately and kept them in my unheated greenhouse and they germinated very quickly. Fewer than about 50% germinated, though. I kept them in pots until they were about a year old and then planted them out in the garden. The aquilegifolium sometimes self seed.

My Thalictrum delavayi self-seeds but I did sow some a few years ago.
Sprinkled seed on compost (around Sept I think), covered with grit and left it in the cold frame.
The first seedlings germinated in a few weeks and I transplanted them, but there were still some coming up the following Spring - so germination can be erratic.
The easiest method is to dig up those that have self seeded in the garden.
