mimosa overwintering question

REMF33REMF33 Posts: 731
Just a quick question. I have a mimosa in a pot - it's 6-7 feet tall. It's currently located againt a west facing fence with a large shed not far away to the south, so quite sheltered. I am in SE London. Should I cover it in fleece over winter?

We have two huge mimosas in our plot and they and their many offspring and suckers do very well (too well) in temps down to -8C so, as long as your pot doesn't freeze and kill the roots there should be no need to fleece the plant but you may want to bubble wrap just the pot for a bit of insulation.

    ok. thanks.
  • Do you know which mimosa it is? some are more cold hardy than others. We have a mimosa dealbata in our back garden and when it was small it lived in an unheated conservatory for the winter but as it outgrew it (they can grow very quickly) we had no choice but to chance it outside and to tell you the truth it's been much happier out there flowering every year. We have had temperatures go down to minus 10 c and it still sailed through. It is in a semi sheltered position but far from the house. It's getting to big now and I have to prune it but waiting until it's flowered in spring.
I'd follow the advice above and make sure the root ball is kept protected because even if the top growth is cut back by the weather they can regrow from the roots pretty quickly.
